#AsianLitBingo Wrap-Up for May

– #Ownvoices Books Read in May –

I’m so excited for the sequel now. The cover reveal warmed my heart.

  • Historical fiction – Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata

Beautiful and a little heartbreaking. Definitely recommended for younger readers.

This was such an excellent space opera with werewolves! Can’t for the next adventure.

I got side-tracked from my original line-up of retelling options when I discovered this retelling of the star maidens, a Filipino folktale. Beautifully written magical realism.

This was my first read and a lot of fun. It may have prompted me to pick up Doctor Who again.

I didn’t get a chance to review these books but will review a few of the above ARCs outside of Asian Lit Bingo in the near future. As co-hosts of Asian Lit Bingo, we organised chats with readers and authors on Twitter towards the end of the month – see the #AsianLitChat recaps for more. I also interviewed Samira Ahmed, author of Love, Hate and Other Filters:

On Asian Lit Bingo:

Seeing readers pick up books that meant so much to us as co-hosts of #AsianLitBingo, just made this a great experience to share. To everyone who participated, thank you for making this reading challenge into a space where each person could share their love for stories by Asian writers.

I’m also thankful to the co-hosts for the Asian Lit Bingo chats filled with ideas, book recs, Bollywood films, K-dramas, T-dramas and C-dramas. Can’t wait to catch up on both my expanding TBR and my to-watch list.

Feel free to join in as I pick up a few books by Pacific Islander writers in response to the erasure of PI identities during celebrations for AAPI heritage month.  July Update: To support Pasifika spaces, please read Anjulie’s post on Pacific Islander erasure in the book community and their Pasifika spotlights posts. I’ll also be casually taking part in #RamadanReadathon and have just posted my TBR, check it out here.
